About Whisky
Whisky is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain mash. First records of that process were found in archeological digs of Ancient Babylon and Mesopotamia and it is believed that distillation was brought to the areas of Ireland and Scotland by Christian monks between 11th and 13th centuries, with some records showing that Ancient Celts practiced distillation during the production of their ‘water of life’. Most famous in Scotland, Ireland and Canada, Whisky is produced in most grain-growing areas, including Australia, India, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Japan, and the USA (where it is spelt Whiskey) each differing in base product, alcoholic content, and quality, but all typically aged in wooden casks, made generally of charred white oak. Malt Whisky is made primarily from malted barley and Grain Whisky from any type of grains. Single Malt Whisky is Whisky from a single distillery made from a mash that uses only one particular malted grain, Blended Malt Whisky is a mixture of single malt Whiskies from different distilleries typically made from a mixture of malt and grain Whiskies, often along with neutral spirits, caramel and flavouring. A Whisky simply described as Scotch, Irish or Canadian is most likely a blend for consistency, however Jameson Irish Whiskey is an exception. Whiskies do not mature in the bottle, only in the cask, so the age of a Whisky is only the time between distillation and bottling.
